The Complete Guide to Growing Lettuce at Home

Lettuce is one of the most rewarding crops for home growers. It grows quickly, requires minimal space, and can be harvested continuously over several weeks. Whether you're growing in a garden bed, raised planter, or even a windowsill container, lettuce is a perfect entry point into growing your own food.

Choosing the Right Variety

Different lettuce types offer different textures, flavours, and growth habits:

  • Butterhead (e.g., Boston, Bibb): Soft, tender leaves with a mild flavour
  • Romaine (Cos): Upright growth, crisp texture, great for Caesar salads
  • Loose-leaf: Fastest growing, ideal for continuous harvesting
  • Crisphead (Iceberg): Requires more care but produces dense heads

👉 Tip: For beginners, loose-leaf varieties are the easiest and most forgiving.

Ideal Growing Conditions

  • Light: 4–6 hours of sunlight daily (partial shade in hot climates)
  • Temperature: 10–20°C (50–68°F)
  • Soil: Loose, fertile, well-draining with compost mixed in
  • pH Level: 6.0–7.0

Lettuce struggles in heat, so positioning it in partial shade during summer helps prevent bolting.

How to Plant Lettuce

  1. Prepare soil with compost or organic matter
  2. Sow seeds shallowly (about 0.5 cm deep)
  3. Water gently but consistently
  4. Thin seedlings once they sprout

Spacing:

  • Loose-leaf: 10–15 cm apart
  • Romaine/Butterhead: 20–30 cm apart

Watering & Feeding

  • Keep soil consistently moist
  • Avoid letting soil dry out completely
  • Use a nitrogen-rich fertilizer for leafy growth

Harvesting for Maximum Yield

  • Harvest outer leaves first (“cut-and-come-again”)
  • Avoid cutting the central growing point
  • Harvest early in the morning for best freshness

Common Problems & Solutions

Problem Cause Solution
Bolting Heat stress Provide shade, plant early
Bitter taste Irregular watering Keep soil moist
Slugs Damp conditions Use barriers or organic pellets

Pro Tips

  • Sow every 2 weeks for continuous harvest
  • Grow in containers for better control
