- Vivosun E42A (Amazon)
Controllers that Don't Work
- Luxx
- Gavita
- AC Infinity
Fertigation Changes?
Favens increase the demand placed on your plants, which means you must provide additional resources to handle the increased demand.
Irrigation Volume
A typical irrigation volume increase in plants is around 10-15%. This change will be easy to manage if you are using substrate sensors. The extra volume can be mitigated by extending the duration of your P1 sequence during stretch and ripening. During bulking, this demand can be met by pushing out your final P2 event later in the day.
Fertilizer
The need to increase fertilizer input varies from facility to facility. Faven recommends starting at a 10% increase in EC input throughout the flowering process. If you feed at a 3.0 EC, increase to 3.3 EC and see how your plants respond. If you need to increase input further, then do so. Faven believe in a less is more approach. Be careful not to over-fertilize.
What makes Faven lighting so good?
The design and internal construction of the Faven range have been informed by years of experience using under-canopy lighting in commercial cultivation environments.
During this time, many available fixtures were originally designed for other applications and were not optimised for installation beneath plant canopies or the demanding conditions of commercial growing facilities. These insights helped shape the development of the Faven under-canopy lighting system.
Waterproof Construction – Sealed Housing
Faven features a sealed housing design, with a single-piece exterior enclosure protecting the internal aluminium structure. This construction helps enhance durability and supports long-term performance in demanding cultivation environments.
With an IP66 rating, Faven is designed to withstand routine cleaning procedures, water exposure and crop management sprays commonly used in commercial growing facilities.
Diffused Optical Lens
Faven incorporates a unique diffused optical lens designed to provide a more uniform light distribution across the canopy. Unlike some open-diode designs, the diffused lens helps reduce hotspots and delivers consistent light coverage throughout the growing area.
This balanced light distribution supports crop uniformity while helping maintain quality in areas closest to the fixture. By improving light penetration and consistency, Faven is designed to support both increased yields and improved crop quality.
Dimmable Control
Faven includes an integrated dimming function, giving growers greater control over light intensity throughout the cultivation cycle.
The ability to adjust output levels allows growers to tailor lighting strategies to suit different growth stages, crop varieties and environmental conditions. Dimming can also be used to fine-tune light levels during later stages of production, helping growers optimise quality while maintaining productive growing conditions.
Spectrum Options
Faven is available in two spectrum configurations, allowing growers to select the option best suited to their primary lighting system.
R8 Spectrum
The R8 model is designed for use alongside LED top-lighting systems, mixed-light environments and greenhouses. Featuring an enhanced red-light component, the R8 spectrum is designed to support improved colour expression and crop uniformity from top to bottom.
R6 Spectrum
The R6 model is designed for use alongside HID lighting systems, particularly HPS installations. This spectrum incorporates a greater proportion of full-spectrum diodes to complement the spectral characteristics of HPS lighting, creating a more balanced light environment throughout the canopy.
This balanced approach is designed to support improvements in crop quality, yield and overall plant performance.
Installation Height & Stands
Canopy Depth (Cubic Canopy)
The ideal placement of Faven fixtures depends on the expected plant height at harvest. Faven under-canopy lighting can add approximately 14" to 20"+ of usable canopy depth, depending on genetics, plant structure, and planting density.
The objective is to create consistent light distribution throughout the entire plant, from top to bottom.
Short Plants – Under 4.5 Feet Tall
For shorter plant canopies, Faven recommends positioning the fixture with the base flush to the substrate lip during the first cultivation cycle. This placement provides maximum under-canopy coverage while allowing cultivators to evaluate light penetration and plant response.
After the first run, fixture height can be adjusted if additional canopy penetration is desired.
For plants in this size range, 8" to 12" stands are commonly used and provide excellent results.
Tall Plants – Over 4.5 Feet Tall
For plants exceeding 4.5 feet in height, many cultivators find it beneficial to position fixtures higher within the canopy.
The two most common mounting methods are:
- Custom PVC support brackets
- Unistrut mounting systems
Typical mounting heights range from 15" to 18" above the substrate.
To maximize light effectiveness and airflow, leaves and nodes located below the fixture placement should be removed.
Lowest Recommended Fixture Position
Faven recommends placing the fixture base no lower than the substrate lip.
This placement helps ensure light is directed into productive plant material rather than being wasted below the canopy, while also preventing unnecessary heat accumulation at the substrate surface.
Stands – Adjustable & DIY Options
Faven offers an adjustable stand with 8", 10", and 12" height settings.
All Faven fixtures include metal mounting clips that can be used to create custom support solutions. One of the most common DIY methods is attaching the clips to inverted nursery pots. Fixtures can also be mounted directly to unistrut systems for a more permanent installation.
What Light Intensity Should I Use?
Managing light intensity with Faven under-canopy lighting is an important part of achieving the best results. The goal of under-canopy lighting is to create a more uniform distribution of light throughout the entire canopy. By delivering light from both above and below, growers can encourage more consistent crop development, improved quality throughout the plant, and increased yield potential.
As light intensity increases during the early stages of the production cycle, it is important to introduce under-canopy lighting gradually to minimise unnecessary plant stress. Faven offers two effective methods for managing light intensity during this period: dimming control and photoperiod management.
Faven fixtures can be dimmed to approximately 45% output. We recommend starting at this level and gradually increasing intensity over the following weeks, with the aim of reaching the desired operating intensity by the end of the initial establishment period. This gradual approach helps crops adapt to receiving light from beneath the canopy while maintaining healthy development.
An alternative method is to control the number of hours the under-canopy fixtures operate each day. Lights can be introduced for a short period and gradually increased over time to achieve a similar acclimation effect. While this approach can be effective, it may result in less consistent light exposure compared with dimming. For growers operating without a lighting controller, adjusting daily operating hours provides a practical way to introduce under-canopy lighting while helping to minimise plant stress.
Many growers find that introducing under-canopy lighting early in the production cycle at a lower intensity provides better results than introducing it later at a higher output level. Early introduction allows crops to adapt gradually to receiving light from beneath the canopy and can support more consistent development throughout the growing cycle.
Every cultivation environment is different, and lighting strategies should be tailored to individual growing practices. If under-canopy lighting is introduced later in the cycle, a gradual increase in intensity is still recommended to avoid excessive stress and ensure a smooth transition.
Despite consuming only 120 watts, Faven fixtures deliver high light output and are capable of providing substantial photon density within the lower canopy. As a general guideline, we recommend targeting approximately 500–800 µmol/m²/s in the lower half of the canopy. Higher light levels can be achieved in areas closest to the fixture where appropriate, helping to increase photon density further into the canopy.
In many cultivation environments, the middle section of the canopy represents a significant opportunity for improving crop uniformity, quality and overall yield potential through effective under-canopy lighting.
Dimming - How Low Can It Go?
Faven units can dim to about 35%-40% at their lowest setting. It is best to utilize this function in early flower. The goal is to slowly increase intensity starting day 1 of flower and aim to be at 100% intensity by day 14/15 of flower. This eliminates any extra light stress plants can experience when introducing under canopy lighting.
Plugging Accessory Wire Into Your Controller
Faven units come with a female RJ11 port (phone jack) with a waterproof cap to maintain our IP66 waterproofing rating. Inside, you will find an RJ11 piece plugged into the port.
Remove this piece and replace it with an RJ11 cord (phone line) that will connect to the controller. Once plugged in, the controller will be able to dim and control on/off function.
